Turmeric smoothie recipes

In the last article, we discussed what turmeric is and what health benefits it offers.

Turmeric, the spice that gives mustard its bright yellow color and curried dishes their warm glow, may also help your body fight inflammation, ward off many diseases including Alzheimer's and cancers.

Many people have emailed asking how to incorporate turmeric into their eating.

One of the easiest ways to add turmeric into your diet is through smoothies.

Here are 5 of my all time favorite turmeric recipes for smoothies I find myself using over and over again.

1. Turmeric, Ginger, Cayenne Shot

I love taking this turmeric, ginger shot in the morning right after my apple cider vinegar water with 1 tsp of honey.

There's no better way to kick start your day than with this healthy citrusy and mildly spicy shot that will give you fuel all day long.

Ingredients

  • 1 knuckle turmeric
  • 1 half Lemon
  • 1-2 knuckle ginger
  • 1 dash cayenne pepper

Directions

  1. Wash all the ingredients.
  2. Add the turmeric, lemon, and ginger into the juicer and make sure the juice is properly extracted.
  3. Sprinkle with a dash of cayenne for an extra kick then drink and enjoy!

2. Turmeric, Mango Tropical Smoothie

This tropical smoothie recipe is full of much-needed nutrients. In a mere cup of mango, you can satisfy 100% of daily need of Vitamin C, 35% of vitamin A, and 20% of folate.  It's really no surprise mango is the most consumed fruits in the world. Besides its nutritional power, this tropical fruit is full of sweetness, and its creamy taste goes with anything from smoothies to dressing. Can't get fresh mangos? Get frozen ones from a local store.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 frozen mango diced
  • 1 medium frozen banana
  • 1/2 tbsp maca powder
  • 1 tbsp shredded coconut flakes
  • 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • 1 cup almond milk (non-sweeten)

Directions

  1. Place all the ingredients into a high-speed blender (Vitamix or Ninja) and blend until smooth. Pour into a mason jar and enjoy!

3. Tropical Turmeric Cleanse Smoothie

This green smoothie recipe is loaded with so many good-for-you "superfoods" that will help you meet your daily nutritional needs. Kale, lemon, ginger, and turmeric, all have anti-inflammatory properties which will help your body fight inflammation as well as help it detox naturally. 

Mango and pineapple lend sweetness and loads of vitamins A and C.  Avocado also provides healthy fats and helps the body absorb the nutrients from all the superfoods. 

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw kale (frozen or fresh)
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup frozen pineapple
  • 1 cup avocado
  • 1 cup mango
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

Instructions

Blend kale and coconut milk until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

4. Turmeric, Ginger, and Carrot Smoothie

This energy booster smoothie recipe is full of vitamin C and A, thanks to the lemon and carrot. You also get a daily boost of potassium from the banana, which is also known to aid digestive health.

Ginger and turmeric are packed with free radicals-fighting and anti-inflammatory properties to help fight against inflammation in the body. 

Plus the bright orange color from the carrot gives it this drink a refreshing look that makes you just want to zip on it all day.

It looks and tastes delicious!

Ingredients

  • Carrot Juice
  • 1 cup (180 g) carrots
  • 1 cup (240 ml) filtered water

Smoothie:

  • 1 medium ripe banana, sliced and frozen
  • 1 cup frozen or fresh pineapple
  • 1/2 tbsp fresh ginger (1 small knob, peeled, sliced)
  • 1/4 Tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) carrot juice
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk

Instructions:

  1. To make the carrot juice, add the carrots and the filtered water to a powerful high-speed blender and let it blend until on high until completely pureed and smooth. Add more water if it is too thick and has trouble blending. Scrape down the sides as needed.
  2. Drape a large, thin dish towel over a mixing bowl and pour over the juice. Then lift up on the corners of the towel and begin twisting and squeezing the juice out until all of the liquid is extracted. Set aside pulp for smoothies, or baked goods (such as carrot muffins).
  3. Transfer carrot juice to a mason jar - It should be good for several days.

Make your smoothie

  1. Add all the ingredients and blend on high until creamy and smooth. Add more carrot juice or almond milk if it has trouble blending. Scrape down the sides as needed.
  2. Taste and adjust flavors as needed. For a bit more sweetness, add more banana or pineapple. For acidity, add lemon. For a kick, add more ginger, and for warmth, turmeric is called for. 
  3. Pour into the glass and drink. Enjoy!

5. Turmeric Green Smoothie

Inflammation is believed to be the root causes of many diseases, including cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, even contribute to skin related problems such acne.

This green turmeric smoothie recipe is packed with nutrients and ingredients that have anti-inflammatory effects in the body.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup kale (watch and chop)
  • 1 cup arugula (watch and chop)
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks (frozen)
  • 1/2 inch fresh ginger root, peeled and chop
  • 1/2 inch fresh turmeric root, peeled and chop
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 cups of coconut water

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients in a high-speed blender, blend until completely smooth. Top it with chia seeds and a handful of walnuts. Enjoy!?

Takeaway

Turmeric is versatile and super easy to add to your diet. These recipes above are just a few examples how turmeric can be added to smoothies and other beverages. Turmeric can also be added to curries, stir fry, baked goods, eggs and even meat dishes.
