Why am I gaining weight?

If you are gaining weight when all you want to do is losing weight, then you need to understand this principle.

We all need a specific daily calorie intake in order to remain healthy and energized. Your daily calorie intake is determined by basic metabolic rate, which is the number of calories your body needs each day to simply perform its basic functions. In other words, you need to consume what your body expends.

If you exceed your daily calorie intake by over-eating, your body stores the excess calories as fat cells in the adipose tissue, just underneath your skin.

As this excess energy is retained as body fat, the fat cells expand. The expanded fat cells also have a larger capacity to hold more fat and wait to be filled. Once they come full, they divide to form new fat cells to repeat the process.

The problem is once these fat cells are created, they can never go away. You are deemed to carry the fat cells. However, the good news is your fat cells can shrink. How? It's simple. Never fill those cells with excess fat. Unless you feed the fat cells, your body can look sleek and toned.

That’s why it is important to have a lifestyle that incorporates healthy eating and physical activity.

Two essentials to control your weight

Healthy Eating

When you eat healthy meals and stay within your daily calorie intake, you won't have any leftover fat that your body feeds to fat cells. Thus, you can stop the cells from expanding and reproducing. The key is to only consume what your body expands. You will gain weight and gain excess fat when more calories are take in than needed.

Exercise

You may think if human bodies are smart and efficient, why fat cells can't manage their own state? It's because, simply put, fat cells are lazy. All they want to do is to sit around, get fed and multiply.

The only weight to combat with the lazy fat cells is to get the butt off and workout to force the body to use more energy than it normally does for basic daily functions. Another can't miss benefit of exercises (especially high intensity workouts) is that it builds lean muscle mass.

Unlike lazy fat cells, muscles are hard workers. Muscles expend energy (calories) throughout the day, even while you sleep. More you build muscles, more calorie your body uses, making it harder to store fat and gain weight.
